This course covers the history of opera, from its beginnings in Renaissance Italy around the year 1600 up to the 21st century.  The class will cover Baroque opera (Monteverdi and Handel, for example), opera in the Classical age (think Mozart), the great operas of the Romantic age (with the great composers from Italy, France, Germany and Russia, including Rossini, Bellini, Donizetti, Verdi, Gounod, Bizet, Massenet, Wagner, Tchaikovsky and Mussorgsky), 20th century opera (Strauss, Puccini, Poulenc, Prokofiev, and American composers such as Gershwin and Menotti) and even 21st century opera.  The course will include plenty of video excerpts from great performances.

Instructor:  Don Dagenais is a longtime classical music and opera aficionado.  He has served on the boards of many local music organizations and has been president of most of them, including the Lyric Opera, Summerfest, Kansas City Symphony Alliance, Kansas City Chamber Orchestra and UMKC Conservatory of Music and Dance. For over ten years he has chaired the Lyric Opera Guild opera travel program.  He is semi-retired as a real estate attorney from Lathrop Gage and lives in Kansas City with his wife Patricia, also a classical music fan.  They have two grown daughters and two grandchildren.
